Students looking to get a career in IT often don't know which route to consider, or even what area to obtain accreditation for. Consequently, without any understanding of the IT market, how can you expect to know what some particular IT person does each day? Let alone arrive at which educational path would be most appropriate for ultimate success. Achieving any kind of right resolution will only come via a meticulous study of many varying criteria:

- What hobbies you have and enjoy - these often reveal the things will provide a happy working life.

A ridiculously large number of organisations focus completely on the certification process, and completely miss what it's all actually about - which will always be getting the job or career you want. Your focus should start with the end in mind - too many people focus on the journey. It's possible, in many cases, to get a great deal of enjoyment from a year of study and then find yourself trapped for decades in a career that does nothing for you, as an upshot of not doing the correct research at the beginning.

Make sure you investigate your leanings around earning potential, career development, plus your level of ambition. It makes sense to understand what the role will demand of you, what certifications are required and how you'll gain real-world experience. Seek guidance and advice from an experienced professional, even if you have to pay a small fee - it's usually much cheaper and safer to investigate at the start if a chosen track will suit, instead of discovering after several years of study that you've picked the wrong track and have wasted years of effort.

Most of us would love to think that our careers will always be secure and our future is protected, but the growing likelihood for most jobs around the United Kingdom currently is that the marketplace is far from secure.
